The forecast was for gale force winds in the evening. I didnt arrive till 5ish and the wind was already pretty strong 25 - 30 knots with quite a few sailors out. The car was rocking with the wind and that was in a slightly sheltered spot so I rigged my smallest sail, my 4.5m as flat as possible.
I was about to use my big 100l board as I was missing a rubber O ring for the pressure valve release on the small AHD board. I asked around and one of the local sailors sorted me out with the rubber O ring so I was able to use my new AHD board much to my releif.
Everyone had started to come in and there was only a few out as the wind was continually strengthening. One guy was about to go out on his 5.9 race kit but I think he came in straight away overpowered.
I got onto the beach and walked slightly upwind for the launch. You know your gonna be overpowered when you find it a struggle trynna walk upwind with your kit.
From the moment I steppe din the water, it was absolutely wild and I was compltely overpowered.
The wind was incredibly gusty so it was a real struggle. One moment I would be going fine and then suddenly, the rig would get ripped out of my hands. Waterstarts I found were pretty impossible as the wild gusts were continually catapulting me. Some of the gusts even lifted the rig and board clean out of the water when I was just grabbing the sail.
There were some nice ramps forming on the waves but as soon as I launched, I would get transported 10metres or so downwind wiping out on landing. I think a 3.2m sail would of been more appropriate for todays conditions. In the lulls, it was just about manageble but I was still overpowered slightly and the board felt really nice. Just looking forward to the next spell of good wind when I can next use my AHD.
